CHICAGO – 3dMD, a pioneer in 3D surface imaging, today announced the official launch of its next generation of modular 3D surface image acquisition devices, the MU Series, at the AAOMS Annual Meeting in Chicago (October 2-5, 2002). 3dMD also announced that the first MU2 production device has been purchased and installed for existing Seattle-based client, Dale Bloomquist, D.D.S., M.S., while newly established Clayton Digital Imaging has ordered the 3dMDface System with the new MU2 device to provide a fully mobile service with the latest in clinically-accurate 3D surface imaging to the UK medical community.

The modular MU acquisition devices enable healthcare professionals to digitize the human form in 3-D to the geometry and texture quality standards required to support surface measurement and clinical assessment. The quick acquisition speed of 0.002 seconds makes the system ideal for capturing images of restless children for pediatric applications. Two-year system user, Peter Hammond of University College London’s Eastman Dental Institute, field tested the pre-production MU2 acquisition device this summer visiting seven locations throughout Europe and the United States. With a focus on the facial aspects of congenital conditions such as Noonan’s syndrome, he imaged more than four hundred patients and family members, who ranged in age from two weeks to more than 80 years old.

“During the past 18 months, I feel 3dMD has truly contributed to advancing our research with a system that enables us to easily quantify how soft tissue is affected by orthognathic surgery and associated orthodontic procedures,” said Dale Bloomquist, D.D.S., M.S. of the University of Washington Orthognathic Surgery Program. “Having already demonstrated reliable performance in everyday clinical activities, I believe the further breakthroughs in 3dMD’s next-generation acquisition technology will enable us to continue to push boundaries with our research and enhance daily interactions with our patients.”
