Research Summary: Scaphocephaly is the most common form of craniosynostosis. The Liverpool Supra-Regional Craniofacial Surgery Unit at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital reviewed ten years of outcomes from two age-based correction protocols, identifying the advantages and pitfalls of each. Children under six months at diagnosis were treated with passive strip craniectomy and microbarrel staving, while children diagnosed later underwent total vault remodeling using a modified Melbourne technique. The team compared pre- and post-operative head shape against a standardised model of typical human head shape built from the real-world Headspace dataset, describing this as the first validated outcome study of its kind for scaphocephaly correction.
