Objective: To explore the effect of nasal tip protrusion on the sense of upper lip protrusion and provide a reference for the improvement of soft tissue beauty.
Materials and Methods: The informed consent and portrait authorization of the model were obtained. A female model was filmed with a three-dimensional camera and her facial 3D model was obtained. The ZBRUSH2019 software was used to simulate the change of nasal tip protrusion on the basis of the original model. Nine dynamic facial rotation videos were produced. An electronic questionnaire was created through the questionnaire website. Orthodontic patients, oral orthodontic professionals and ordinary adults were randomly selected to fill in the electronic questionnaire to evaluate the effect of different nasal tip protrusion on the sense of upper lip protrusion. The visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to evaluate the sensory degree of upper lip protrusion in the questionnaire. The higher the score, the more prominent the model’s upper lip was in the image. The generalized linear mixed model was used to perform statistical analysis on the questionnaire data.
Results: In general, as the nasal tip protrusion of the 3D model decreased, the score of the subjects’ evaluation of upper lip protrusion increased. Interaction analysis showed that among male subjects, when the nasal tip protrusion variable was +6 mm and +4.5 mm, the scores of the general population subjects were higher than those of the orthodontic patients ( P = 0.023, P = 0.047); when the nasal tip protrusion was +6 mm, the scores of the general population subjects were also higher than those of the subjects related to orthodontics ( P = 0.023); when the nasal tip variable was -6 mm, the scores of the general population subjects were lower than those of the orthodontic patients ( P = 0.003), and there were no statistically significant differences among the other retest distance groups ( P > 0.05).
Conclusion: When the nasal tip protrusion decreased, the subjects all had the visual illusion of upper lip protrusion; and when the nasal tip protrusion was too large, the general population had the most obvious visual illusion of upper lip protrusion.
