About Us

3dMD was founded in 2000 with a single focus… delivering non-invasive, anatomically precise 3D surface imaging to the healthcare community with an emphasis in pediatrics. Two co-founders, one mission… advance patient care and research through software-driven reconstruction technology that had never been applied to the human form at this level of 3D-shape accuracy before.

From day one, 3dMD was purpose-built to capture and reconstruct dense-surface images of the human form with near ground truth 3D-shape accuracy. At its core, 3dMD is a software company. The system hardware exists to serve the software… industrial-grade machine vision cameras synchronized with an LED lighting environment to provide input to 3dMD’s sophisticated Active Stereo Photogrammetry reconstruction software algorithms. The output is progressive image sequences of Real-World 3D/4D Human data… a software-reconstructed, dense-surface representation of a real human subject in motion with near ground truth 3D-shape accuracy.

3dMD fully supports open 3D and 4D data formats and actively participates in initiatives to establish and maintain international data standards. 3dMD data is directly compatible with 3D printers… enabling solid objects to be generated from Real-World 3dMD Human data without intermediate conversion.

Fast forward to today… progressive sequences of Real-World 3D/4D Human data captured and reconstructed with medical-grade 3D-shape accuracy are what separates reliable AI, Machine Learning, and Computer Vision models from ones that fall short in the real world. Synthetic approximations, sparse markers, parametric models, and 2D photos/video have limits. Real-World 3dMD Human 4D data delivers what they cannot.

That Real-World 3dMD Human data advantage has persistent value… re-mined as research evolves, AI models develop, and humanoid platforms advance. It is why a worldwide 3dMD customer community spanning healthcare, Computer Vision, AI and Machine Learning, humanoid robotics, wearable tech, human factors, ergonomics, and AR/VR has trusted 3dMD technology for over two decades… and why that community continues to grow.

With more than 10,000 software-driven cameras deployed worldwide and hundreds of peer-reviewed research publications produced by the global 3dMD customer community, the Real-World 3dMD data advantage is not a claim. It is a proven track record.

That clinical foundation, built over 25 years, is what gives 3dMD its authority across every application it serves today… and every application still to come.

Our Management Team

Christopher Lane
Co-Founder, CEO, and Chief Technology Officer

Christopher Lane co-founded 3dMD with a clear technical vision… build the world’s most accurate software-driven 3D/4D imaging technology for the human form and establish it as the trusted foundation for every field that depends on Real-World 3dMD Human data. Twenty-five years later, that vision is the foundation of everything 3dMD does.

As CTO, Lane has driven an R&D strategy that has positioned 3dMD as the benchmark supplier of software-driven, high-precision dynamic 3D/4D dense-surface imaging systems worldwide. Today he is directly involved in industry initiatives promoting the data and security standards needed for the widespread deployment and use of Real-World 3D/4D Human data. Lane brings years of technology sector experience to 3dMD… from software engineering and UK government IT consulting, through senior VP positions at Oracle across Europe and the US, to investment roles at EM Warburg Pincus and CEO of Atlanta-based TSW International where he led the company to market leadership in Enterprise Asset Management.

Kelly Duncan
Co-Founder, EVP, and Chief Commercial Officer

Kelly Duncan co-founded 3dMD determined to create momentum for the adoption of a then next-generation non-invasive 3D imaging modality in the healthcare community with a special emphasis on pediatric and children’s hospital adoption… a mission that has since grown into a worldwide customer community spanning healthcare, AI, Machine Learning, humanoid robotics, wearable tech, human factors, and AR/VR.

As CCO, Duncan is responsible for the integrity of 3dMD’s sales, customer support, and business development operations, and is directly involved in the company’s day-to-day fiscal, operational, and commercial management. Her founding commitment to advancing patient care and research through technology remains the commercial heartbeat of everything 3dMD does.

Duncan brings years of technology sector experience to 3dMD… from senior customer-facing and management positions at leading technology companies, to directing the launch of an e-commerce software product at emerging growth B2B provider prior to sale, through to marketing and public relations leadership at Manhattan Associates during the company’s successful IPO. She holds a BA in Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Andrew Aubrey, PhD
Director, Technical Operations

Andrew Aubrey leads 3dMD’s day-to-day technical operations… managing R&D, software development, QA, and production while ensuring successful support for 3dMD’s continuously growing global customer community. With more than 15 years of specialist experience in 3D imaging and software, Dr Aubrey sits at the intersection of 3dMD’s two core disciplines… the software engineering that drives the reconstruction and the deep research understanding of what the output means for the humans it captures.

Dr Aubrey holds a BEng and MSc in Electronic Engineering and earned his PhD from Cardiff University specializing in audio-visual speech analysis. Before joining 3dMD he was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Cardiff University’s School of Computer Science and Informatics, focused on 3D modelling and animating human facial dynamics and the perception of expressions… research that maps directly to 3dMD’s core applications in healthcare, AI, Computer Vision, and AR/VR. He has held research positions at Korea University in Seoul and the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen, Germany.

His primary research interest lies in advancing the understanding of human face and body dynamics through Real-World 3D/4D imaging technologies and sophisticated downstream image application software… the foundation of everything 3dMD builds.

Mike Nugent
