Objective: To compare 3D mandibular morphometrics of neonates with Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) to age-matched controls, establish normative data, and better understand anatomic differences.
Materials and Methods: Retrospective case-control study — 25 neonates with non-syndromic PRS vs. 25 age-matched controls.
Results: Asymmetry in PRS body length was significantly higher than in control mandibles (p=.006). PRS measurements larger than controls included intercondylar distance, intergonial distance, pogonion-interdental distance, ramus height, and ramus-height-to-body-length ratio; PRS measurements smaller than controls included intercondylar angle, body length, and effective mandibular length (all p<.05 or better).
Conclusions: Micrognathia in severe PRS is constituted by a wide and antero-posteriorly short mandible for its height, with implications for mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) surgical planning.
